Welcome to Afro Smoke BBQ. We were formed in November of 2011, in concept. That concept became a reality in January of 2012. Home base for Afro Smoke is Maricopa, AZ.

Before we go too far, let's clear the air right now. No we are not a bunch of pot heads who got high one afternoon and in the midst of our munchies decided to form a BBQ team. In fact we are all hard working, tax paying, upstanding members of society. That doesn't mean we won't share some good conversation and a cold one with you. Let's not get carried away.

My name is Rick Steverson, and I am the head cook or in BBQ lingo the Pitmaster. Whatever! I'm just the guy on the smoker trying to put a smile on your face. Afro Smoke is by no means a a one man show, it's a team endeavor. My wife Shawna Steverson, my homie Pat Birchmeier make up the core team. Each of whom is gracious enough to let me flex my ego and call it my own from time to time. Excuse me while I try to squeeze my head through this doorway.

So, why even have a BBQ team? Truth is I love to compete, and totally dig the challenge of activities which cannot truly be mastered. This would explain my affinity (my wife would say addiction) to golf, poker, and now BBQ.

My love for BBQ came from chowing down on my old man's ribs. Call it a son's love, but my dad could do no wrong on the grill. Like any red blooded American boy I just wanted to be like my dad. So when I asked for the rib recipe my dad shook his head and said pointing to his Afro (hint: might have something to do with team name),"It's all in here son." So I sat my happy ass down next to him and started picking his brain and bbq'n with him. As I continue on my path to BBQ enlightenment, I realize that he didn't really mean in his head. That's just what a little nappy headed kid could understand. I've come to know and understand that what he really meant was, (I'm holding my hand on my chest) "It's all in here son."

Afro Smoke is destined to be some of the most inconsistently great BBQ that you've ever tasted, because it's different every time. Why? Well we believe that BBQ is a journey not a destination. Like anything else in life it must evolve. We cook from our hearts, and for the love of BBQ. The best thing we have going for us is my ultra detail oriented/OCD wife who tries desperately to measure and remember steps so the que is the same each time. At the end of the day she's right (shhhh, don't you dare tell her I said that), and we're getting there.
